How Important are Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are the best way to avoid new cavities on permanent molars. Sealants should be considered at least for all children when their molars erupt. Dental sealant is a thin, composite coating painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth. The sealant quickly bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth which forms a protective shield over the enamel of each tooth.
Dental sealants are a nontoxic composite coating applied to the chewing surfaces of permanent molars. The coating protects back teeth by filling in the deep grooves where particles of food and germs can get stuck and cause decay.
Sealants are most effective when applied shortly after molars have erupted before teeth have had a chance to decay. They are an important part of an overall preventive maintenance routine for oral hygiene.
Sealants can last up to ten years when properly applied and checked regularly. While dental sealants are most commonly given to children and young adults, adults without fillings or tooth decay can also benefit from sealants.
